Newspaper union accepts givebacks ahead of sale (Boston Globe)

The Portland Press Herald’s largest union voted overwhelmingly Friday to accept wage and benefit concessions designed to pave the way for the Seattle Times Co.’s sale of its Blethen Maine subsidiary. A union official said he expects the deal to close by mid-June.

S&P Equity analyst Efraim Levy said in a May 29 note that unconfirmed media reports in the Wall Street Journal and elsewhere that GM plans to file for Chapter 11 on Monday follow news of the Obama administration’s push for a speedy restructuring where GM bondholders would forgive $27 billion in unsecured debt and not oppose the reorganization, in exchange for more favorable terms.

Police unions use scare tactic to avoid share of budget cuts (The Barnstable Patriot)

Barnstable’s police unions fired some cheap shots at taxpayers last week, mimicking Dick Cheney’s scare-the pants-off-’em strategy, all to evidently protect their members from the cuts and sacrifices required of all municipal departments and taxpayers at large to confront temporary hard times.
